Lifelong … or at least semester-long … learning

First Peoples' Principles of Learning

As emphasized in the First People’s Principles of Learning above, “Learning involves patience and time.” My students have been given that time through our semester projects – learning that is entirely self-chosen and self-directed, which they will share with the class and future classes. We’ve learned a lot so far, and we’d love to share it with you!

Are you interested in learning about the perfect three-point shot in basketball? Austin and Akash are working on it. Soccer player? Follow Taya’s journey learning how to juggle a soccer ball. Want to learn tricks on your skateboard? Talk to Dylan. Are winter sports your passion? Talk to Adam about skiing and snowboarding.

Perhaps cooking is more your thing. Ria is doing her project on the Food Network. You could also talk to Haley about sushi, Melanie about mochi, Ryan about waffles, or Sam C. about baking.

Are you crafty? Aemen would certainly like to become so, with her new Pinterest account. Perhaps some of Chase’s new photos will end up on there! Olivia is learning to make a perfect box joint, while Arman is learning about shaping glass. Teyah wants to knit a scarf, while Kaitlyn is going to learn how to play the guitar. Jaylin, on the other hand, is conducting experiments to created flavoured envelope glue, so we no longer have to taste the horrible chemicals when sending mail.

Several of my students are focused more on experimentation: Patrick is going to try and create a tornado in a bottle, while Anna and Sam D. are trying to become ambidextrous. Others are more interested in the research side of things: medieval wars, for Sandy, and world monuments for Hannah.
